Types of Carpet Padding & Their Pros and Cons

Thick padding may not be as durable, and anything over 8/16″ will cause installation problems. Right, rule out the idea that thin foam will be any kind of barrier or do much vibration damping. It's good for two things - attenuating high frequencies and isolating adjacent objects or surfaces. If you have flooding that has saturated not only your carpet padding but also your floor then it would be advisable to contact a professional. Sprinkle a light amount of baking soda over the carpet padding.

Down the center and running under the central console is a stiff, white reinforcement about an 1/8 of an inch thick. It doesn't seem to be very absorbant, and I'm guessing I can get away with just spraying it with peroxide and letting it dry. If necessary, use the shop vac or wet vac to eliminate any standing water.

As always, consult your radiant heat system company to be sure what you get is appropriate for your system. But there are a few cases where it makes sense and saves you money. Frothed foam is newer and unlikely you’ll be able to tell the difference in it and normal foam, so let’s skip this one. If you have slab rubber (not to be confused with waffle rubber… see above if you don’t know the difference), it most likely can be reused. You also have a chance of reusing a good quality rebond pad if it’s in a low-traffic area.

That can lead to damaged flooring if you’re not careful. Fortunately, lots of carpet pads these days come with a vapor barrier. This protective layer can prevent spills and pet accidents from penetrating the cushion, with some products offering protection for up to 24 hours. So what about foam padding, fiber padding, or rubber carpet padding?

How Much Does Carpet Installation Cost?

Waffle padding is more expensive than Rebond but provides similar durability. This, along with synthetic fiber, is also one of the best paddings for homes with radiant heat floors because it’s thin enough to allow heat to escape. You don’t want to have any part of your rug sticking out as a result of not being properly glued to the car floor.

Generally, with rugs, you want a felt pad, a rubber pad, or a mix of felt and rubber. Just like in carpet, if you love your rug, support it by not cheaping out on the pad. An even surface is critical for rugs–this means no waffle padding, and if you’re laying the rug on an uneven surface like carpet, you need even firmer padding.

Extreme Carpets

Carpet Padding provides a foundation beneath your carpet that extends the carpet’s life, creates a more comfortable walking surface and reduces noise. It can also act as a barrier against moisture reaching your subfloors. Your carpet style, amount of foot traffic, manufacturer’s warranty, and budget are all factors in deciding which carpet padding to buy. Looped carpet refers most often to Berber carpet styles or other short pile commercial carpet types. For these installations, most manufacturers require synthetic fiber pads. Prime foam padding comes from a large mass of foam that’s been sliced to be used as carpet cushioning.

Remove or peel back the carpet so you treat the affected / wet area of your carpet padding. Depending on if you’re bringing in a flooring company/painting company to help with your projects, you may want to lay flooring before painting. Because flooring includes sanding and prepping walls as well as smoothing out any wall gouges, it’s best to remove your old carpet and install new before painting. You don’t want to risk scuffing the walls and having to clear off the dust from a freshly painted wall. Carpeting 1,200 square feet costs between $8,000 to $13,200. Large areas cost more to install due to higher material, delivery and labor costs.

This should be done using a masking paper and a masking tape as they can be easily removed upon completion of the spraying process. Roll out the underlay from a corner of the room, with the mesh on the bottom, orienting it perpendicular to the direction your floor will be installed. We are purchasing some Shaw Nylon Carpet with a face weight of 32.7 and are deciding between 5/16th 8lb Rebond or the Temperpedic 7/16th 8lb . We don’t want the NIKE considering the bad reviews and there are also mixed reviews with the Temperpedic . It works in doors, too, if you can handle 3/4" thick pad and figure out a good way to support/seal it to the metal.

The difference is prime foam/standard foam has gas mixed in with the foam when it’s manufactured. The smaller size of the car compounds some of the issues with airflow but a few steps dry your padding and eliminate moisture will often do the trick. You may be able to find alternative natural fiber carpeting, such as cotton, sisal or jute, but these are more common in rugs. Ask your contractor about their natural fiber carpet selection.

It also helps reduce walking fatigue with its shock-absorbing properties. Unfortunately, we don’t have the option of 7/16th 8lb Rebond. I even called Shaw carpeting and the rep really wasn’t much help, she just said not to go over 7/16th or 8lbs.

The padding under your carpet will act like a sponge and when your carpet is wet the padding underneath will soak in the water. Even though your carpet is wet you want to make sure there is no water in the padding. Triexta is a new, slightly more expensive, alternative to nylon.

If you live in a cold environment, carpet padding will help retain some of your home’s heat. If you live in a hot environment, carpet padding will prevent cool air from escaping. A good quality waffle rubber pad is similar in durability to rebond but costs more. This padding literally looks like a waffle (yum… waffles), and the pockets make this not as durable as slab rubber. Below are some universal steps to drying your carpet padding if it is wet.

You can dry out your carpet padding and the rug does not necessarily need to be completely removed. Textured, cut pile carpet is the most common style and costs $2 to $4 per square foot on average. Textured carpet is tall, plush and comparable to a short-haired shag rug or tapestry. Taller piles are more expensive and best for low-traffic bedrooms. Olefin carpeting is among the least expensive materials, costing just $2 per square foot. It’s best installed in low- to moderate-traffic areas since it matts down quickly and attracts oils.

Most people won't bother with making a 'sand glue sandwich' or using lead in their car, and I never said that MLV is the only option out there. If it has good density and mass, as metioned it can be very effective. While you did achieve something by using the CLD to control panel borne vibrations, the foam did absolutely nothing to block sound from coming into your vehicle.

After it drys, I found an car restoration shop that says he has some of the same type of padding he will sell me and I'll glue it back on myself. If the inside of your car and the padding is wet due to a spill, leak, or rain fall similar issues can arise as they would with your carpet padding. The carpet padding will retain moisture and this moisture will allow for the growth of mold and mildew. You can have a rotten smell or stench in this situation. The carpet padding will take longer to dry than the carpet so a degree of patience is required. Foam padding is lighter and softer than a denser fiber padding and thus foam may take even longer than the fiber.
